Sacramento Standoff Over: Suspect Killed, Child Hostage Okay

(SACRAMENTO, CA) - Authorities say a standoff in a Sacramento apartment has come to an end, with the suspect being shot dead.

A Sacramento County sheriff's spokesman says 26-year-old Anthony
Alvarez was fatally shot Friday evening after police used an
explosive charge to blow a hole in the side of the apartment where
Alvarez had been barricaded inside.

Sheriff's Sgt. Tim Curran says Alvarez was shot multiple times
when he "engaged' an officer.

Curran says the 1-year-old boy being held hostage since
Wednesday when the incident began escaped serious injury, suffering
only an abrasion on his leg.

The child was taken to a hospital as a precautionary measure.
