President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney will campaign in the state this week, following close on the heels of Democratic candidate John Kerry and underscoring the importance of Nevada as a battleground state.

Bush will address the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America on Thursday and tour the union's $25 million training center before heading to Los Angeles for an evening fund-raiser.

"We think it's important for Nevadans to hear directly from the president and the vice president about their optimistic agenda for the next four years," campaign spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt said.

Bush plans to discuss the war on terrorism and his economic policies.

"Nevadans understand the importance of pro-growth policies and President Bush's commitment to small business that has resulted in robust job creation in the state," Schmitt said. "We believe John Kerry's backward economic agenda will be a tough sell in Nevada."

It will be Bush's third trip to the state since becoming president. He visited Las Vegas in November, raising $3 million for his re-election bid, and visited Reno in June.

Cheney heads to Elko on Saturday to attend an afternoon campaign rally. It's the vice president's fourth trip to Nevada this year, coming just two weeks after he addressed the Disabled American Veterans national convention in Reno.

With almost even voter registration among Democrats and Republicans, Nevada and its five electoral votes has been identified by both parties as a battleground state. Bush won Nevada in 2000 with 49.5 percent of the vote to Democrat Al Gore's 46 percent. Clinton carried the state in 1992 and 1996.

Kerry wraps up a two-day campaign swing to southern Nevada on Wednesday with an event highlighting his prescription drug plan.
