SPARKS, NV – Two people killed in an accident on Pyramid Highway Monday afternoon are being identified. Trooper Chuck Allen with NHP says 82-year-old Gus Willey and 70-year-old Hazel Willey, both of Reno, were killed.

According to Allen, the two-vehicle accident happened at 12:39 pm, in the southbound lane, just south of Serenade Drive in Spanish Springs.

The accident involved a white 2004 Ford F-350 pickup and a green 2006 Subaru Outback wagon. The two occupants of the truck died in the accident.

Allen says it appears the accident was caused when the Subaru struck the pickup, causing it to veer off the roadway and roll-over. Allen says Gus and Hazel Willey were not wearing seatbelts, and were thrown from the truck.

After hitting the truck, the Subaru traveled several hundred feet before veering off the road, striking a rock, rolling over, and hitting a 6-foot-tall fence. The two men inside the Subaru, 51-year-old Richard Thomas Mikulski and 67-year-old Robert Frank Mikulski, both of Reno, were extricated from their car. They were taken to Renown Medical Center. As of Tuesday, Richard is in fair condition, and Robert is in critical condition.

A witness to Monday’s accident tells KOLO 8 News that he was driving behind the two vehicles involved in the accident. He says the Subaru passed him on a double-yellow section of the road. When it tried to pass the pickup, it clipped it, sending the truck off the road and causing a huge cloud of dust. When the dust cleared, he says he saw a hole in the fence, but no vehicle.

The man suggests that this is a dangerous area. He says just a few weeks ago, he witnessed another car roll on the same stretch of highway.

Trooper Allen is asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident to contact Trooper Eric Gallagher of the Major Accident Investigation Team at (775) 689-4661 or the DPS-Communications Center at (775) 687-0400 regarding case # NHP-1004190884.
