New Postage Stamp Honors Tahoe's Wooden Boats

The annual Concours d'Elegance wooden boat show is underway at Carnelian Bay. But you can own one of the classic boats for the price of a postage stamp.

The stamps depict a 1931 Gar Wood Triple Cockpit Runabout, a 1954 Chris-Craft Racing Runabout, a 1915 Hutchinson Brothers Launch and the 1939 Thunderbird Hacker-Craft. They were released nationwide last week.

The citizen's stamp advisory committee reviews about 50,000 stamp suggestions each year. Of those, Rudkin says the postal service selects an average of 35 each year.

Rudkin said an undercover postal service representative went to the Wooden Boat Show at the Sierra Boat Company in Carnelian Bay in 2005 to scope out potential stamp candidates.

As she puts it, "I think it was time. It was time to honor these really cool boats, these really cool types of collectible vehicle."
