RENO, Nev. (AP) - A 26-year-old man has pleaded guilty to three felony charges for his role in the theft of two pricey puppies and the killing of another dog.

Jonathan Paul Johnson, of Reno, awaits sentencing June 4 after entering the pleas Thursday in Washoe County District Court.

Johnson was accused of supplying his vehicle and acting as the lookout while another man stole the two English bulldog pups from an elderly couple in November 2008.

Another dog - the puppies' 5-year-old grandmother - gave chase and was accidentally run over during the thieves' getaway.

The 7-week-old male and female puppies stolen from Sparks dog breeders Ross and Arlene Harwood have never been found. They had been expected to fetch up to $1,800 each.

Johnson's friend, a man whose name is believed to be Michael Donica, also has never been found, authorities said.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Dan Greco said Donica had been to the Harwood home earlier in the day pretending he was interested in buying the puppies.

Greco said Donica later broke into the home and grabbed the puppies, while Johnson provided his vehicle.

"This office has been consistently harsh on criminals who victimize elderly citizens or abuse defenseless animals," Greco said. "This case is just the latest example of that practice."

Johnson pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting felonies of home invasion, robbery of the elderly and grand larceny.

A lawyer for Johnson said last year that Johnson was deployed in a war zone in the Army and had been struggling with substance abuse.

Sadly parents no longer teach quality of human life let alone a family pets life. Children need to be taught how to treat others and pets they think they want to have let alone know how to care for since they were not cared for by their parents. When a child is abused a dog is abused neither can speak for theamselves. I am amazed that animal control who gets paid to help is too busy complaining about having to work for the paycheck they get.. This taxpayer is not happy with hiring anybody who will do it.
