RENO, Nev. (AP) - Waste Management will be accepting some large items for free at its Reno and Stead transfer stations and the Lockwood landfill in honor of Earth Day and to try to curb desert dumping.
This weekend, the company will accept freon-free refrigerators and other large appliances, as well as chairs, sofas, mattresses and box springs for free at its transfer stations in Reno and Stead. Other household goods will be accepted at a reduced rate on those days.
Free residential dumping for almost all materials at the Lockwood landfill will be April 15-17, April 29-30 and May 1.
A company spokesman says the offer will help keep thousands of yards of waste and bulky items from being dumped illegally in the desert.
