Beautiful cars are all over Reno; tourists are checking out downtown; and everyone else seems to be enjoying themselves. But this hasn't always been the case for Hot August Nights. Fights; vandalism; and even riots have taken place in the last 10 years.
One police officer tells Kolo-8, the department isn't handling this year's festivities much different than in year's past. There are still officers patrolling downtown undercover; on bikes; and in squad cars.
Police say they've had a few reports of gang activity, but wouldn't comment any further.
Officers are closing down several intersections and cracking down more on people sleeping in their cars. Locals are noticing the difference and tourists are appreciating the friendlier atmosphere.
So far, it looks like this year's hot august nights will be remembered for all of the right reasons.
