Reno police have released the names of three officers who were involved in Thursday's shooting death of an armed drunken driving suspect.
They were identified on Monday as Sgt. Tom Robinson, Officer Jeff Hobensack and Officer Joe Robinson. Police said Tom Robinson was the only officer to fire his weapon during the incident on Kuenzli Street.
Police were called to an apartment complex on a report of a drunken driving accident.
Witnesses said the man struggled with the first two officers at the scene before he was confronted by a third, who repeatedly ordered him to drop his weapon.
When the man refused and picked up a large rock, Robinson fired several shots, hitting the suspect at least three times.
The man, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Tom Robinson was involved in another shooting incident in April 2002, again when a suspect refused to drop a weapon.
Police responded to a home in Pleasant Valley after a neighbor said Joshua Lehman had called him asking for a gun or a rope. Police stopped Lehman, who refused to drop his knife, and Robinson and Reno Police Officer Bob Tygard shot him.
District Attorney Richard Gammick said it appeared that Lehman was suicidal and apparently decided to die by police gunfire.
Neither Hobensack nor Joe Robinson has been involved in previous shooting incidents.
