An armed man who crashed a van through an apartment complex gate and then fled on foot was shot and killed by Reno police.

It wasn't immediately known if man fired at the three pursuing officers, Assistant Police Chief Jim Weston said.

Witnesses said the man pointed the gun at them and refused orders to drop the weapon.

Weston said the man, whose name was not immediately released, was shot in the chest twice by one officer. He died at Washoe Medical Center.

The shooting came after police received reports of a drunken driver with a gun at the Riverwood Apartments around 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Weston said.

The man drove a gray van with Idaho license plates, but police didn't know if he owned vehicle.

Officers involved in the shooting were placed on routine, paid administration leave pending an investigation.
