Residents of the Keno Motel in Reno are allowed to go back inside their building, after it was evacuated Sunday morning when high levels of carbon monoxide were detected inside.
Rik Kajans with the Reno Fire Department told KOLO 8 News that while residents are allowed back in the building, they will likely be without electricity and hot water until sometime Monday. The building’s owner is arranging for residents to stay in nearby motels until utilities are back-on.
Officials say the source of the leak was an exhaust pipe that was knocked loose near the roof of the building. Contractors are working to fix the problem.
Reno Firefighters responded to the motel at 322 N. Arlington Ave. Sunday morning around 11 am after a carbon monoxide leak was reported.
The building was evacuated, and tests were conducted. High levels of carbon monoxide were found in the building.
5 people were taken to local hospitals to be treated for exposure to the gas.
The Keno Motel has about 25 residents.
Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas that can be toxic to humans and animals.
