RENO, Nev. (AP) - Activists are questioning the rising death
toll from a controversial government roundup of wild horses from
the range north of Reno.

U.S. Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman JoLynn Worley says 77 mustangs involved in the Calico Mountains Complex gather have died
so far - 70 at a Fallon facility where they were taken and the rest
at the roundup site.

That's nearly double the 39 horses that had died when the
roundup of 1,922 horses concluded on Feb. 5.

Horse advocates are pressing the government for measures to deal
with the situation.

Worley attributes the deaths mostly to the poor body condition
of mares that were sent to Fallon, where the animals are being
prepared for adoption or transfer to pastures in the Midwest.

Oh boy....now I've heard it all. Poor condition my a**! Had they left these horses alone and let them run free, as they should, there would not have been 77 dead horses. They not only stressed them by taking them out of their "natural" environment, they down right MURDERED them. These horses were not meant to be rounded up (by helicopter's,no less), and held in holding pens. This has gone too far now. I just wish someone would open those gates and set them free again. How many times would these fools "waste" the taxpayer's money to round them back up again and again. Let them free and they will survive just fine. This is just so crazy killing them like this. Makes me sick!

I think it stinks that there is not enough rangeland for the wild mustang, due to the overuse of that land by cattle and sheep. Worse the BLM is not even letting any of these animals clear the forest floors reducing the fuel that burns thousands of acres. Way to go!
