Penny For Your Slots
Reno
As gaming revenues here in Nevada continue to plummet, here in Washoe County alone, we’ve seen a drop for the past 31 months, there is one bright spot. It’s a shiny as a copper penny.

Go into any casino here in Nevada and you won't see the one armed bandit that we’re all use to referring to: instead the most popular game is the penny slot.

January numbers show the penny slots were the month's biggest source of revenue for casinos statewide. And that's not a new phenomenon. Here at Baldini's this gaming area once housed table games, now it is filled with penny machines.

“Well I think most people don't have a lot of money to spent so they come in with the intention of spending so much but making it last longer,” says Phyllis Bodley, an experienced penny slot player.

Bodley says she likes the graphics and sounds the machines make as well, there is always something new that appears on the screen.

“You can spend a lot of money on penny machines. You can spend a whole lot of money on them. In order to really get anything, you have to play the max,” says Judy Teneyck who adds her husband loves the machines.

“They started out in Australia. The Australians told us they were coming to America. We weren't sure how we were going to deal with pennies because we are used to dealing with dropping quarters into slot. And once we ran our ticket in ticket out system we were ready to embrace the penny product,” says Eric Dale the General Manager at Baldini’s Casino.

Dale says the graphics, the noise and the designs of machines capture the attention and keep the gamer playing the machine. Many will increase their bets as time goes on, hoping for bonus rounds and even free play.

The penny slots have become the bread and butter for most casinos in the state. So are multi-denominational slots which allow the person to bet on several different levels with one penny all the way to 25-cent denominations.

In January the Gaming Control Board reported penny slots brought in $146.9 Million to casinos statewide. The multi-denomination slots more than $268 Million--making them the biggest source of revenue for casinos statewide.

i am wondering if the community leaders are so worried about the gaming revenue, why have they not brought in a lottery???? a nevada lottery would not only create jobs, but help boost revenue that is being lost to the califronia lottery play just out side of town.. plus it will keep the money here in this state... come on state officals, think about it school theachers need some revenue help in the class room as well as other commmunity services that are being shut down and people being layed off.. what a better way to rise that money to keep these service open and a benifit to our commuity.... just a thought.....
