He lived here, applied for a driver’s license and was arrested. And all of that activity isn’t that far removed from the shooting at the Pentagon.

John Bedell has been described as bio-polar or manic depressive patient who had a fascination with conspiracy theories, computer programming, libertarian economics and the science of warfare.

The Associated Press was able to obtain a recording of Bedell as he rambled on about government corruption.

“Government distribution of economic resources are generally misguided or even shameless lies to advance enslavement and conceal theft and murder,” says Bedell on the recording.

“On Monday February 1st at 9:30 one of our Washoe County Deputies initiated a contact with John Paul Bedell. He answered several questions and admitted he had in fact been using marijuana,” says Washoe County Sheriff Mike Haley. Haley says Bedell was initially stopped for erratic driving.

Haley says they aren't sure exactly when Bedell arrived or when he left town.

His parents last saw him on January 18th, and on January 22 he came to the Department of Motor Vehicles and applied for a driver's license. Officials here say he presented a birth certificate, another driver's license and a social security card--all acceptable at that time. They sent the license to a Motel 6 on South Virginia, but when he didn't appear to court on March 2nd, the DMV says it was ready to revoke that license.

Investigators say Bedell checked out of this Motel 6 on February 2nd. They aren't saying whether he stayed in town or made his way to the east coast at that time.

His family devastated by the news of Bedell's assault on the Pentagon on Thursday sent out a statement today, "One thing is clear," they said, "his actions were caused by an illness and not a defective character."

Investigators have found a previous link between Bedell and the Pentagon.

Back in 2004, he asked the pentagon to fund his DNA, nanotechnology research. In his 28 page proposal he said his work could enhance the capabilities of the defense department as well as the individual warfighter.
