Irrigation District Sued Over Death Of Fallon Man

The widow of a Fallon man who died while irrigating last year has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Truckee-Carson Irrigation District.

In her district court complaint originally filed in May and amended Friday, Nona McFarlane alleges the district's negligence caused the death of her husband, Johnnie McFarlane.

According to law enforcement authorities, he was trying to pull or replace boards in an irrigation box when he lost his balance and fell into the T-Line Canal in May 2006. He struck his head on rocks lining the canal and drowned.

The lawsuit claims the "take-out" structure that Johnnie McFarlane stood on the night of his death "was in very poor, rundown condition from faulty design and lack of maintenance."

The suit names the district and four district employees or consultants as defendants, and asks for general damages of at least ten-thousand dollars against each, and punitive damages.

Neither the TCID nor the other defendants have filed an answer to the complaint.
