A man who was shot and killed by Reno police after he fired shots from a handgun into the air near the downtown casino district was identified on Saturday as Joseph Parsons, 62, of Reno.
Three uniformed officers responded to a 911 call about the shots being fired shortly after 2 p.m. Friday near the Ross Manor Hotel at the corner of West and First streets, Reno Police Lt. Jon Catalano said.
After a confrontation on the sidewalk, one officer fired a shot that struck the man, Catalano said.
Officer Sean Jones, a 5-year veteran of the police department, was placed on routine administrative leave following the shooting.
Parsons was at the Silver Peak brewery a few hours before the shooting took place.
One passer-by e-mailed comments to our Kolo 8 website:
'I was there... near Arlington and First St. I witnessed a police SUV speed approx. 45mph east on First St to come to a screeching halt on corner of West St. during that, there were at least 3 or 4 shots fired, I crossed the street before the Java Jungle so as to be able to duck behind cover if need be, the final shots were fired. By the time I saw anything, the dead gunman was rolled on his stomach, hands tied behind his back, later untied when paramedics attempted c.p.r.'
A waitress tells Kolo-8 Parsons was a regular at the Silver Peak Brewery.
The Washoe County Sheriff's office will lead an investigation
into the shooting
