RENO, NV - The University of Nevada, Reno is announcing a plan to cut 6.9 percent from its budget, including plans to close the College of Agriculture along with several departments and degree programs.
UNR announced the proposals Monday to meet a state-mandated reduction of $11-million, decided by the Legislature’s Special Session.
Here’s a breakdown of the proposed closures and cuts:
- Bachelor’s degrees in animal science and animal biotechnology, the minor in animal science and the master’s in animal science
- Bachelor’s degrees in agricultural and applied economics, the minor in agribusiness, the bachelor’s degree in environmental and resource economics, the minor in natural resource and environmental economics, and the master’s and doctorate in resource economics
- Master’s degrees in all education counseling fields, education specialist, and teaching English to students of other languages in the College of Education, as well as all doctorate-level degrees in the College of Education.
- Minor, major and master’s degree programs in German studies, French and Italian through the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
- Bachelor’s degree in interior design
- Doctorate degrees in anthropology, history and political science, master’s degree in philosophy and master’s degree in speech communication
- Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management
- Bachelor’s degree in statistics and a master’s degree offering with a statistics concentration
The University says some students in degree programs slated to be cut will be allowed to complete their degrees before their departments close, while other students will be referred to other departments to receive degrees in related areas. Students will be contacted individually for academic advisement.
Decisions will be made by June 30th of this year, and changes will become effective on June 30th of 2011.
If the proposals are approved, more than 75 faculty and staff members will be without jobs beginning July 1st of 2011.

Is this problem from years of bad decision making by the University or is this a sign of the times? My guess is both. The Universty is supposed to educate our youth on viable ways to make a living in agriculture, yet the UNR AG Department cannot sustain itslf. Is this a lack of implementing business fundamentals? I am sick to see my tax dollars going to Wallstreet businesses with million dollar bonuses while the AG program at a state university is being flushed down the toilet. We need to be investing in our future which is our youth, not the Wallstreet leaches. How can we bail out AIG but let a program that teaches our children how to feed and clothe this nation fail? Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
I just got accepted into UNR and i planned on majoring in Veterinary Science which is a part CABNR...I highly doubt that I would even be considered to vet school with out this program. what am I supposed to do now?
Without education programs what are students suppose to go? All you hear about is oboma still pushing his one trillion dollar medical care bill and giving each sttate pennies for education. It starts at the top and trickles down. Every nation that was once powerful fell from within, to spending, to much taxes. Why doesn't UNR and UNLV get together and combine their programs? Keep some in the north and some in the south. It doesn't help with Oboma spouting off his mouth and talking bad about our state. Where's Harry Reid at in this mess, running his mouth about health care.
