Officials are cracking down on what they call the newest contraband to turn up in Nevada prisons: cell phones.

Inmates in other states have been caught using the phones to buy drugs and phone fellow gang members in other prisons.

Nevada prison spokesman Glen Whorton said steps are being taken to keep the phones away from inmates here.

"There is technology out there that can identify and locate those phones, and that's all I'm going to say about that," Whorton said.

"Cell phones are security issues for all corrections institutions. We've caught a couple of them," he said.

Many inmates have access to people outside the system who can slip them cell phones while they're part of work or fire crews, Whorton said.
