A man authorities believe shot his wife, beat another woman and took his three teenage daughters hostage early Wednesday was found shot dead hours later at Lake Lahontan.

Walter Nelson Ball Jr., 43, was found at the lake 30 miles east of Carson City soon after an Amber Alert was issued for the missing girls, ages 13, 16 and 19, Lyon County Sheriff’s Capt. Allen Veil said.

Seeing their only chance for survival, one of the three girls fatally shot her sleeping father in the head with the gun he had used to abduct them from their Silver Springs home, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office said.

Walter Nelson Ball Jr., 43, who was facing sexual assault charges and had been released on $100,000 bail a week earlier, was found dead in his Jeep Cherokee in a remote area of Lahontan State Park.

Veil said deputies at the scene reported the girls were injured, but the extent or nature of those injuries were not immediately known.

The incident began around 4 a.m. when Ball reportedly went to the family home and shot his wife in the face, Veil said. Another woman believed to be the girls’ grandmother was severely beaten, he said.

The older woman was taken to Carson-Tahoe Hospital in Carson City and was listed in stable condition, the sheriff’s office said.

The wife was flown to Washoe Medical Center in Reno and was in intensive care.

Sheriff’s officials said Ball had recently been arrested for suspicion of sexually assaulting one his daughters and was out on bail.
