Wildfire Threatens Northwest Reno Homes

An afternoon brush fire which threatened homes near the Mormom temple in northwest Reno has been contained without causing any property damage to homes.

The 40-acre fire in sagebrush near the interesection of Avenida de Landa and Beaumont Parkway was first report about 2:45 p.m.

Reno Fire Department officials said their main concern was for house in the area and their efforts were divided into both fighting the fire and protecting homes. At the height of the blaze, approximately 20 homes in the area were threatened.

In addition to fire engines, an air tanker and a helicopter were helped to contain the blaze as it neared the crest of a ridge to the north of the Mormom temple.

One firefighter was overcome by heat exhaustion and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, however fire officials believe the blaze to be caused by humans.
