Emergency Declared in Inyo County as Crews Douse Fires

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has proclaimed a state of emergency in Inyo County to help deal with the recent wildfires.

The emergency declaration means the eastern Sierra Nevada county
will have more state resources to cope with the fires.

35,000 acres have been charred since Friday and the fires caused the contamination of the primary water supply for the tiny town of Independence.

The lightning-sparked blazes in Inyo National Forest still rank as the state's largest fire complex.

Meanwhile, crews made progress on a nearly 23,000 acre blaze about 125 miles northeast of Sacramento in the Plumas National Forest.
