Trustees to Consider Changing School Calendar

A proposal to start the 2006-07 school year two weeks earlier than usual will be considered Tuesday by the Washoe County School Board.

District staff are recommending that board members not change the start of the school year. The first day of school now is during the last week of August.

Most people favor ending the semester before winter vacation but oppose moving up the start of school to early or mid-August, according to a district survey of about 1,500 students, parents, teachers and others.

Some businesses also oppose starting the school year earlier, saying it could affect their bottom line. The Reno-Sparks Chamber of Commerce joined in the opposition.

No vote is planned Tuesday.
