LAS VEGAS (AP) - Several hundred university students boycotted classes to stage rallies against plans for deep cuts to state funding for Nevada colleges.

University of Nevada, Las Vegas, spokesman David Tonelli estimated a crowd of about 500 students took part in a Tuesday morning demonstration and rally at the UNLV Student Union.

Campus leaders say they want lawmakers to reject Gov. Jim Gibbons' calls for another round of education cuts to help close a nearly $1 billion shortfall in the state's approximately $6 billion budget.

Many boarded buses and carpooled to the Grant Sawyer State Office Building in Las Vegas for another noisy rally.

They chanted "No More Cuts" outside, while members of the state Interim Finance Committee met inside.

Several university administrators and regents say they support the student effort.

Reno Redhead: I do pay for my education, I pay $28,000 a year for it and now the state wants me to pay more and give me less? I pay them so I will get the best education with the best faculty and the programs I need to graduate and they cant just cancel what I have paid for for 3 years now. As a paying customer of NSHE I want the product I was promised. If not I, and all other out of state students, can just leave and go to a state that cares. See how the loss of us will effect your economy.

To Reno Redhead, Did you attend a private university? If not, then feel free to return all of the state money that was paid to your school while you attended. You can write your check to Board of Regents. I guess we should only offer post-secondary education to those people who can afford it. So let's close all public institutions - you know the ones - the ones who are non-profit, the ones who invest in research and strive to solve society's problems. Let's send our kids to FOR PROFIT colleges who are only looking to send big dividends to their share holders and who could care less about creating knowledge. Aren't you lucky that you were able to go to school at a time when people understood the value of public universities. I'm proud of the UNLV & CSN students who protested today. At least they are actively participating in the debate and doing so in the rain! They understand that anything worth having is worth working for - they worked hard today!
