High temperatures in Reno and across northern Nevada aren't the only records that were shattered Thursday.
Sierra Pacific Power Co. reported record electricity use as people cranked up air conditioners to stay cool.
Usage peaked at 1,742 megawatts around 5 p.m., when the temperature in Reno was 108 degrees.
One megawatt provides enough electricity for about 600 households.
The previous record of 1,740 megawatts was set on July 18, 2005,
the utility said.
Sierra Pacific serves more than 361,000 electric customers in northern Nevada and the Lake Tahoe region of California. Its customer base has grown by about 8,000 over the last two years.
