Work is nearing completion on a huge mural in downtown Sparks that city officials say will showcase the best of what Victorian Square has to offer.
The 18-foot tall by 90-foot wide mural is being painted along the freeway wall between 10th and 11th streets facing Victorian Avenue.
It features a depiction of activities held at the square, including the Sparks Farmer's Market, Hot August Nights, the Nugget's Best-in-the-West Rib Cook-off and Sparks Hometowne Christmas.
Artists Chad Sorg and Erik Burke are known both locally and internationally for their work. Sorg has done commissioned work for
various commercial properties in northern Nevada, including Red Hawk Golf Resort and Carson-Tahoe Regional Medical Center. He's also involved with the Nevada Arts Council and Sierra Arts Center.
Burke runs a mural and design company and is the founder of The
Temporary Gallery. He has completed work in Rio de Janeiro, Copenhagen, Berlin, Sarajevo and Budapest.
The city budgeted $22,000 for the project, which will eventually involve two murals, said Greg von Schottenstein, the city's special events supervisor.
Completion of the first mural is scheduled for around July 15.
