Toxicology results are pending to try to determine what caused the death of a man during a struggle with officers, authorities said.

Jacob J. Lair, 26, died Wednesday after he was sprayed with pepper spay and shot with a stun gun during a struggle with Sparks police and Washoe County sheriff's deputies.

Sheriff's Deputy Michelle Youngs said Sparks officers went the Lair's girlfriend's home to question him about a property crime. Washoe County deputies were called to assist after Lair struggled with the first officers.

Youngs said Lair suffered from an apparent medical emergency during the incident and collapsed.

Officers at the scene administered CPR and called paramedics. Lair was taken to Washoe Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Reno police are conducting the investigation.

Authorities said Lair was previously convicted of robbery and burglary in Clark County and had no fixed address.

Records show he was sentenced to prison in 1997 and released in November.
