Mother Arrested After Toddler Found Wandering Alone

A Reno mother is facing child endangerment charges after her 2-year-old son was found wandering alone in a downtown park.

Zabra Penn, 30, was on a drinking binge when she left the boy in Wingfield Park, police said.

The toddler, wearing only shorts over a diaper, was found Sunday night by a homeless man who called police. The child, who wandered around the park for about 90 minutes, was placed in the care of child protective services.

Authorities said officers located the parents when the boy's father, who was at work at a downtown casino, called police after a co-worker saw the boy's photo on the local news.

As police were interviewing him, Penn arrived and was arrested, authorities said.

Police Lt. Ron Holloday said Penn indicated she had been drinking at various downtown establishments and was unaware she had lost her son.

"We're very glad this turned out the way it did," Holloday said. "This boy was wandering around and could have been struck and killed or seriously maimed by a car.

"Children need to be cared for 100 percent of the time," he said. "There's no such thing as a part-time parent."
