LAS VEGAS (AP) - An annual survey by Education Week magazine ranks Nevada 50th in the nation for the quality of its public K-12 education.
The Quality Counts 2010 survey gives Nevada an overall report card score of D. The nation, as a whole, earned a C.
Nevada's overall score was dragged down in four main categories as Nevada got D's in students' potential for success, K-12 achievement, alignment or matching teachers with student need and school finance.
Nevada ranks 48th in the nation in education spending.

Nevada is a sorry state in many aspects, it's school system appears to be no exception. If you happen to work in the gaming business you will be forced to breath second hand smoke, there seems to be no regulation requiring even minimal protection, say by providing fans. It's my opinion that the gaming industry controls the state's legislature, not the other way around. But getting back to the educational system, Nevadans can be assured their newly elected governor will continue to defund the public school system. It is my view he wishes to place education into the hands of private enterprise. Soon in Nevada only those making a decent wage will be able to provide a decent education for their young, but then again, that is the Republican agenda for education in a nutshell. I hope Nevada's residents, who overwhelmingly voted Brian Sandoval into the governorship, are ready for the ramifications of their collective actions.
I completely agree with this survey. Nevada is such a poor state. Carson City has a horrible school system. Classes are too easy, and hardly any of the AP classes are filled because people can't afford it. Due to the state's economy being completely based on gambling (and prostitution, yipee), there's nothing else for teens to do. What does that mean? They turn to drugs and other crimes because they're BORED. Which kills their brain cells and makes education in NV even harder. I wish I never lived in Nevada in the first place. My entire school career has been here, and it's horrible to notice the fact that I hate school because it literally does suck. I need a challenge. I want to learn. There is no way I am going to stay in Nevada and go to college here. I'm going to challenge myself and go to another state.
Nevada people... look at your own schools before you say anything bad about any other states.
