A man hijacked three drivers at gunpoint Saturday evening, and led law enforcement agencies on a pursuit lasting hours. Elko County Sheriff’s officers are still looking for him.
Officers say Anthony Michael Fairbanks was stopped around 5 p.m. for a traffic violation in Eureka County on Saturday night. As the deputy approached his vehicle, Fairbanks sped away…traveling eastbound on Interstate 80.
Law enforcement agencies were notified immediately and following Fairbanks, who then decided to exit off I-80 using the Elburz off-ramp, about 16 miles east of Elko.
That’s where he bumped into another car, a tan Chevrolet Malibu. Officers say Fairbanks got out of his car and ordered the family of three out of their vehicle at gunpoint, drove for about a mile, then across the median to the westbound side of the road, and stopped.
There, a couple driving a Mercury Mountaineer slowed down for what they though was, a traffic accident. Fairbanks ordered that couple out of the car at gunpoint, and drove on I-80 westbound…and once again, coasted along the Elburz off-ramp.
Officers say he then traveled northbound to a ranch, where there were three female residents and a parked red Ford Expedition outside.
Investigators say that’s when Fairbanks pointed the handgun at the three females and demanded their vehicle. The females complied, and Fairbanks drove off…traveling westbound on I-80.
Finally, troopers with the Nevada Highway Patrol found Fairbanks on State Route 225 about ten miles north of Elko. A pursuit began and the officers say he suddenly drove off the interstate, heading west on dirt roads that prohibit vehicular traffic. They say he drove right through fences and ditches before they lost track of him.
21-year-old Anthony Michael Fairbanks is 5’8”, 155 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. He was last seen wearing a dark blue bandana, dark blue shorts, tennis shoes without laces, and was not wearing a shirt.
Law enforcement agencies ask that if you have any information on where Anthony Michael Fairbanks is, you are asked to call the Elko County Sheriff’s Office.
