SOUTH LAKE TAHOE (AP) - California's Tahoe Queen won bragging rights by edging Nevada's M-S Dixie Two today in the 12th Annual Great Lake Tahoe Sternwheeler Race.
The contest between rival tourist boats at North America's largest alpine lake is billed as the only sternwheeler race west of the Mississippi River.
Both sternwheelers were filled to capacity with party-goers, while spectators lined nearby beaches along the course to watch the "battle of the paddles."
The California-Nevada border off South Lake Tahoe serves as the start and finish line for the six-mile race.
The M-S Dixie Two still leads the series, seven-to-five. The event was part of Opening Day Lake Tahoe festivities that also included a parade, street block party, geocaching contest and parasailing competition.
The celebration marking the start of the summer tourist season is produced by the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority.
