Head Of Tahoe Tourism Panel Resigns

Bill Chernock has announced his resignation as executive director of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, the Tahoe area's biggest tourism agency which faces budget cuts totaling nearly $1.5 million.

Chernock, citing personal reasons, said Thursday he'll leave the $77,000-a-year job Aug. 31 and plans to move to Las Vegas. He took over the post about two years ago, after the former director, Terry LeBan, quit.

According to a staff report, the LTVA's funding from South Lake Tahoe will be cut by $485,220 for the coming fiscal year and by almost $1 million from the Tahoe Douglas Visitors Authority, the LTVAs counterpart just over the Nevada line on the lake's south shore.

The two tourism organizations will meet in the next few weeks to review a possible consolidation.

Cuts also are in store for LTVAs agency, Weidinger Public Relations, as well as the Lake Tahoe Marathon and the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship.
