TMWA Says Despite National Study, Our Drinking Water Is Perfectly Safe
Arsenic, pesticides, industrial chemicals, even dry cleaning solvents. All of these are substances the "Environmental Working Group" says can be found right here, in our local drinking water. But TMWA says none of it's true.

RENO, NV - Arsenic, pesticides, industrial chemicals, even dry cleaning solvents. All of these are substances the "Environmental Working Group" says can be found right here, in our local drinking water. The national non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. just released results from a study that claims Reno's water is some of the unhealthiest in the nation.
TMWA officials are calling the report inaccurate, irresponsible, and offensive. They say our drinking water here in the Truckee Meadows is and always has been not only safe to drink, but way above standards.
85 percent of our drinking water comes straight from the Truckee River itself. That's why a report from the Environmental Working Group may have been so surprising to locals. EWG officials claim that Reno's water is contaminated with at least eight different chemicals, three of which violate health guidelines.
So why is it that locals seem so happy with the water they drink? Gym-goers at Sports West Athletic Club are guzzling it down.
"It's amazing, it's really good," who filled a bottle from the tap after her workout.
And Buckbean brewmaster Dan Kahn says nearly 90 percent of his beer is made with local H20, a risk he says he wouldn't take if he thought it was unsafe. In fact, he says he's had the water tested himself and found it right in line with EPA standards.
"I've been a lot of places in this country and always thought this was the best-tasting municipal water I've ever had," said Kahn.
And just to prove it's safe to drink, TMWA employees gathered for a gulp of it, saying our local water has never had a single violation under EPA water standards. They monitor 1,000 samples of water per month, just to make sure. And when they're thirsty, they drink straight from the tap.
"We drink the water everyday. The water is safe on a continuous basis. Don't feel because of this report that there is any risk to your health," said Paul Miller, TMWA Water Quality Manager.
The Nevada EPA is also on TMWA's side. In a statement released today, it says the EWG report has some major holes in it. While the report claims our water is fifth-worst in the US, EPA officials say it's above federal standards, and in many people's opinion--some of the best water in the nation.
State officials say the non-profit group, EWG who released the report, may have had a hidden agenda when they said our water was unhealthy. According to the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the EWG gets financially compensated every time someone buys a water filter.

Hello Reno, just a note to let you know that I have travelled all around this nation and have had some rude tasting water at times. This water here in Reno (and from TMWA)is great tasting water, I'm a customer. Having a background in the water industry myself, I am aware that the drinking water in Reno and Washoe County is safe to drink and that many sincere and dedicated individuals and agencies are monitoring the process so that we can all drink our tap water without concern. I know what it takes for TMWA, and Las Vegas, to meet these requirements and the record speaks for itself. I think it is a shame that Environmental Working Group is working to scare the public into buying water filters for profit. Be aware that home drinking water filters will not remove all chemical contaminates, and if not maintained properly will harbor a wealth of bacteria. Thank you.
The arsenic in the Truckee River comes from the high mountains where the mining industry used arsenic to separate the iron ore. I'd sooner believe the ewg.org results. I had a toxic screen using hair analysis and found that I am at the 100th percentile for arsenic poisoning, and I drink Reno water. Look at the World Health Org website for the world's hotspots for arsenic. Nevada is one of the most toxic along with Bangladesh where people are dying from arsenic poisoning. Arsenic is one of the invisible toxins that compromise the immune system. TMWA is the one with an agenda. Their water quality report shows that arsenic levels are at the federal max for arsenic, but data can be manipulated to meet guidelines. I doubt that the federal guidelines are fully informed by studies on the effects of arsenic poisoning on the immune system. It actually gradually shuts down the organs. People in Bangladesh can't avoid drinking their tainted well water. At least Americans have a choice.
i was just listening to their message on the phone they claim that they have some of the cleanest water in the nation!!! well at least they have the newest fleet of cars to drive around in. what a non profit crock of crud.. maybe if they were not out shutting off people water they could monitor the water better. well at least they look good not having any customer service in those fancy new cars they have. i wonder if they need to raise my rates to cover these new vehicals.
