Two citizens groups will hold meetings this week to consider a decision to close more than 2,340 acres of the Pine Nut Mountains southeast of Gardnerville to protect fossil remains.
Off-road vehicle enthusiasts have criticized the Bureau of Land Management's April 27 emergency closure.
The area remains open to non-motorized uses such as hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. Main roads are to remain open to all traffic.
John Dicks, president of the Pine Nut Preservation League, said he does not think the closure will remain in place for long.
"My experience is that emergency closures are not permanent," he said.
The preservation league is set to meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Fish Springs Fire Station.
The Pine Nut Mountain Trails Association will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School.
