Local residents woke up to a big chill Tuesday morning as temperatures dipped below zero. Because those temperatures were never going to get above freezing, that presented its own set of problems... whether you wanted to get behind the wheel or pull on a pair of snow boots.
The sounds of the morning after-- as people try to dig out, and pull out from yesterday's snow storm.
“Just another day in paradise,” says John St. Hilaire.
St. Hilaire says he took his chains off earlier in the day, but this afternoon he's paying for it as snow shoveled off the streets ends up stacked near the curb.
Mark Hain says he's been snow blowing sidewalks yesterday non stop. Even the below zero temperatures didn't phase him.
“I like doing this, this is playing in the snow, you can see its cool throwing snow all over the place,” says Hain.
Accidents like one on the Rock Boulevard entrance onto Interstate 80 West didn't stop when the snow did. Nevada Highway Patrol tells us a dodge truck lost control and hit another truck...the force of impact did a lot of damage to both vehicles who had to be towed from the scene.
Speaking of towing, we watched a small golf cart at UNR needed a tow from another service vehicle. According to a grounds supervisor here, this Gator is the way to go. Ron Wilson spreads sand on roads and sidewalks around campus. His job started at four this morning when it was three degrees below zero outside.
“When you start working and get the momentum going and you're working up heat, body heat, I tell you, you are hustling, you are hustling to get it done for the students, that's our main goal here is the students,” says Wilson.
These are some of the coldest temperatures we've seen in the Truckee Meadows in the last 11 years. And forecasters say those temps are not going to let up anytime soon.
