SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, California (AP) - Comic Relief has donated $155,000 for an upgrade of the El Dorado County Animal Shelter in South Lake Tahoe.
Group founder Bob Zmuda says the donation is part of the organization's efforts to help ease the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina, which left tens of thousands of pets homeless.
Animals stranded by Katrina will be available for adoption at the shelter after the project is completed in November.
Plans call for one animal at a time to be brought from shelters on the Gulf Coast to the local facility. When the pet is adopted, another dog or cat affected by the disaster will be sent to the shelter.
Founded in 1986, Comic Relief stages telecasts featuring top comedians to raise money for those in need.
