SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - The Placerville lawyer who was replaced as kidnapping suspect Nancy Garrido's defense lawyer says he never considered trying to sell her story as part of a book deal and that Garrido still wants him to represent her.
In an appeals court filing made public Tuesday, Gilbert Maines disputed the alleged conflict of interest that led El Dorado Superior Court Judge Douglas Phimister to take him off the case earlier this month. Garrido and her husband, Phillip, are charged with kidnapping, raping and holding Jaycee Dugard captive for 18 years.
In appealing the judge's decision, Maines revealed that someone had accused him of drunkenly discussing details of the case at his Placerville golf club and saying he would make money from a book or movie deal after the trial.
The 3rd District Court of Appeal in Sacramento refused to reinstate Maines.
