You wouldn’t pick Cesar Hernandez out of any crown. He looks like any other American teen. But now his legal status has him standing out in a way that could cost him his life.
Cesar says he knew at a very young age that he was here illegally, but until recently he never gave it much thought. Suddenly it's what sets him apart from the friends he grew up with and now may keep him from getting the help he needs.
Doctors say his kidneys are failing. He needs a transplant, but doors are closing and he's falling through the cracks. Rosa Ibarra is a single mom supporting herself and her 2 children cleaning homes and has no insurance. Though, ironically state welfare says she makes too much for them to help out. The Kidney Foundation says it can't help because he's undocumented. Nevada Medicaid may say the same. Cesar has been here since he was 4. It's the only home he's ever known. Now his legal status looms very large.
There may be a willing donor who is a compatible tissue match. His father is no longer with the family. He is living in Texas and has said he’s ready to donate a kidney to his son. First they have to find a way to fund the operation.
If you would like to help you can go to any Wells Fargo Bank and donate to the Cesar Hernandez Fund. The account number is 3954787093.
