The Reno City Council has postponed a decision on the former Y-M-C-A property site to give community leaders 30 days to try to raise money to buy it for a community center.

West Haven Development purchased the facility and four-acre property on Foster Drive in February and is seeking a zoning change to build 52 homes.

But a group of supporters is urging the city to buy property and use it as a community center.

The Y-M-C-A opened in 1960 and has two large gyms including four
basketball courts, a swimming pool and a fitness center.

The site also has the Wiegand day-care center and the Link Piazzo center for before- and after-school programs.

City officials estimate buying and upgrading the aging property could cost around 8 (m) million dollars.
