Two men are behind bars, accused of stealing a 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser belonging to a company owned by Reno Mayor Bob Cashell.
The vehicle, registered to Cashell Enterprises, was in the driveway of the mayor's son when it was stolen last weekend, officials said.
On Monday, a friend of the Cashell family saw the Land Cruiser on Interstate 80 and called police.
Sparks Police Lt. Tom Carson said a Reno detective followed the vehicle until Sparks police attempted to stop it near Sparks High School.
"Both occupants got out and ran," Carson told the Daily Sparks Tribune. "The units managed to catch both the passenger and the driver."
Beau Hicks, 20, and Jason Hatch, 26, were arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle, police said.
Carson said Hicks also was charged with a drug violation after officers found what appeared to be heroin in his possession.
During a City Council meeting Monday, Sparks Mayor Tony Armstrong suggested Cashell owed the responding officers lunch.
Cashell was out of town on vacation until May and unavailable for comment.
