RENO, Nev. (AP) - Sheryl Crow is joining the call for a halt to federal government roundups of wild horses in the West, branding them as inhumane and unnecessary.

The Grammy Award-winning singer is asking President Barack Obama
and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to scrap a proposed roundup of 2,500 mustangs in northern Nevada.

Crow, who campaigned for Obama last year and performed at his inauguration, opposes Salazar's plan to move thousands of wild horses to preserves in the Midwest and East to protect horse herds
and the rangelands that support them.

U.S. Bureau of Land Management officials say they plan to remove 11,500 wild horses and burros from the range over each of the next
three years because booming numbers of the animals are damaging the
range.

Why don't these people put their money where there mouths are? All this lip service to "save the wild horses!" and none of them actually DO anything to help. Adopt one, or pay for its upkeep. Stop expecting the taxpayers to subsidize the care of these horses when you also expect the government to do nothing to control their population. Shut up or put up.

I live in Nevada. I was out monitoring horses just a couple days ago. No starvation, no range degradation... except where too many cattle exist. Education? the BLM numbers from the beginning were "guessed" at. when hard counts pointed out they were wrong... they never changed. The numbers of horses are often "low-balled" to divide the land in leases like a bad -real estate office bent on quick cash. When there is over-grazing (big surprise) the horses are blamed. Less than 3% of the cattle utilized for industry grazes subsidized by tax-payers (welfare-ranching) and could disappear and the economy wouldn't burp. ALL of our wild horses exist on public land and are fast disappearing from the American landscape... there is no balanced public use. Contracts perpetuate contracts at the expense of the tax-payer and an American symbol of hope.

Actually it quite irritates me when someone takes up a "cause" when they don't live smack dab in where their "cause" is, and are present on a daily basis to see what effect they will have good or bad. I have to agree with Steve and Kelley's comments in this.
