Bill and Caroline Burgess lost their oldest daughter, Mackenzie, in February of 2007 from a viral infection. In her memory, they started a non-profit organization named "The Mackenzie Burgess Memorial Funds." The money goes to kids for tutoring and soccer scholarships. Caroline Burgess says, giving back helps the family deal with their loss.
"Mackenzie was the first family member I've ever lost, and I didn't really know what to do. Our youngest children were 5 and 2 at the time and I don't know how much of her they're going to remember as the years go on, so I figured this was going to be the best way to keep them a part of Mackenzie and keep Mackenzie's name in the community. It's been the best thing for us for healing."

Mackenzie Burgess loved school and playing soccer. When she passed away two weeks before her 12th birthday, Bill and Caroline decided to make and sell wreaths with all proceeds going to Sylvan Learning Center and Great Basin Youth Soccer League. President of the League, Richard Jay says the scholarships mean a lot to the kids.
"Getting them out on the field, seeing them out there having fun, establishing new friends, learning the sport allows many of the kids to continue on with soccer into high school."
Due to the economy, last years wreath sales didn't reach the first years 900 wreaths sold. This year, the Burgess family is seeking all the help they can get. 135 kids have received scholarship funds. This year, the number of kids applying for scholarships has tripled. The Burgess family says, so far they haven't had to turn anyone down, and they hope to keep the funds going as a way of keeping Mackenzie's spirit alive.
Bill Burgess says it's their way of making a statement in this world since Mackenzie isn't here to do it. "When people order our wreaths, they not only get to spread some Christmas cheer at their front entrance, but they're also supporting their community and helping a lot of kids that need a lot of help."
The Wreaths are from a tree farm in Minnesota, but the bow that go on the wreaths are made locally by the Floral Supply Center. They start making bows in June and finish up around the first week in December. Wreaths and donations to the Mackenzie Burgess Memorial Funds can be purchased and given online. The Burgess family also needs help assembling wreaths. For more information on how to help or get involved, visit www.meetmackenzie.com

Thank you for your effort to help the kids in need on the soccer field. Your kind heart which was opened by your daughters death is now a gift to the children in need. My son who was 3 when his father committed suicide was one of the children who needed these kind of scholar ships to save his little broken heart and soul...he is 28 now and a soccar coach for his 4 year old son! I thank you and you beautiful daughter!
Mackenzie was a student of ours at the time of her passing. We are so honored that her family has asked us to be a part of helping others in this special way. This is an amazing way to keep her positive attitude, her generous spirit, and her love of learning alive in our center.
