The three crew members who lost their lives in a medical helicopter crash early Saturday are being remembered.
"Anytime you hear of any accident in the profession that you do you re-evaluate what it is you're doing and evaluate what risks you are taking absolutely," Maggie Tole, a flight nurse and vice president of Careflight, said.
Although Careflight is not affiliated with Mountain Life Flight, whose chopper crashed, they share the same helipads and the crew was known to Careflight personnel.
We surely take time to step back send out sympathies to the families to the crew members and the management of Mountain Life Flight to everyone," Tole said.
The Mountain Life Flight helicopter crashed after dropping off a patient at a Reno hospital and taking off to return to Lassen County. It's the same scenario in which another Mountain Life Flight chopper crashed more than seven years ago. The chopper went down in Honey Lake in Lassen County, killing one and injuring two. Tole said there's been an increase in air ambulance accidents in the past couple years, and authorities are studying the matter. So far there are no conclusions.
"When you look at the overall amount of takeoffs and landings the amount of hours that are flown throughout the US, yes (air ambulances are safe)," Tole said.
Tole said many become medical helicopter personnel to provide critical care that can often save lives. She said that the work can especially make a difference for people living in rural areas.
The National Transportation Safety Board is expected to move the debris from Saturday's crash to a secure location to continue its investigation.
Mountain Life Flight is planning a memorial at its hangar in Lassen County Friday at 1 p.m.
The crew is identified as: Pilot James Bradshaw, 40, Chief Flight Nurse Clinton Reger, 39, and Chief Flight Paramedic Christopher Ritz, 37.
