RENO, Nev. (AP) - The Regional Transportation Commission has voted to update studies and seek federal funding for a street car and light rail project.

Now, the Reno City Council has to decide whether to seek voter approval next November to ask the state Legislature to raise the state property tax cap to fund the city's share of the project.

Plans call for first building a street car line on Virginia Street from California Avenue in downtown Reno to the University of Reno campus, a $67 million project. The next phase would build tracks from downtown to the Reno-Sparks Convention Center at an estimated cost of $84 million.

While street cars are initially planned, light rail trains would eventually be purchased and would run on the same tracks in a final phase.

Why not build a lightrail down the middle of 395 from the North Valleys all the way to South Reno!! Help us out of the traffic jams on the highways would ya! And maybe prevent the every day accident at the 395/I80 interchange!!! Duh!!

Typical idiocy by the Reno government. They bury the train tracks because they cause congestion downtown. Now, 'Hey, I have a great idea, lets put in another train to take it's place!' How stupid do you have to be to come up with this stuff? And on top of that, the city keeps taking prime property downtown for government buildings, then wonders why the tax revenues are down. Bunch of morons running this city.

Great... what are they going to do with the TRAFFIC! How will intoxicated people cross Virginia St. We just burried the train......
