RENO, NV - Where are the stimulus dollars going? It turns out you can track them on a new interactive map at Recovery.Gov.

Click on the state and you learn, Nevada has been awarded nearly $988 million dollars under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of which not quite a third has been received. And the federal government says more than 5600 Nevada jobs have been directly created or saved.

Want more detail? It's there, by the zip code. Grants and contracts to a number of local governments, schools and others in our area.

That dot? It's the Mariposa Academy of Language and Learning, a bi-lingual charter school which received nearly $273,000 dollars.

That one is one of the area's Boys and Girls Clubs, one of three that received grants of $42,500 dollars. The entry lists no jobs created, but the organization says the money saved seven and a half positions among those three sites and they say it's likely one of those sites would have had to close if not for the funding.

Local law enforcement agencies planned to use stimulus money to put more officers on the streets, but instead it's plugging budget holes, saving some that are already there.

Sparks PD, for instance, is saving six positions with its share, instead of adding the six it had hoped for.

With unemployment topic number one these days, some may find the number of jobs created or saved disappointing, but UNR economist Elliott Parker says the reporting is deceptive and while some funding may not directly create jobs at the receiving agency, the money put in the economy is creating jobs elsewhere.
