After police fatally shot an alleged armed robber on Winston Drive Sunday, people who live in the area say it's time to create a neighborhood watch.
"I heard the first three shots and as I was on the phone talking to the 911 operator, I heard the rest of them," Pamela Laird, a resident of Winston, said of Sunday's incident.
Officers fatally shot 23-year-old Scott DeMars as he threatened them with what looked like a gun, police said. The gun turned out to be a fake. Wearing a ski mask, DeMars had just robbed the Valley Market, police said.
People who live nearby say they're frustrated with all the crime in the area.
"Very frustrated, very frustrated I'm a home-owner and a business-owner right there on that street and it's just horrible now," Juanice Markham said.
"That's the second time in two months, there's murder or a killing in our neighborhood there's been drive-by shootings I'd say in the last two months it's really picked up," Laird said.
Members of the community gathered to talk about a neighborhood watch at Monday's Neighborhood Advisory Board meeting. Reno City Councilmember Jessica Sferrazza said neighborhood watches have been effective elsewhere.
"Oliver-Montello, the Neil Road area, also the Wells Avenue area has an extremely successful neighborhood watch but it doesn't work unless we get the neighborhood involved," Sferrazza said.
Those who might like to get involved are encouraged to contact the City of Reno.
