The Reno Aces' first year was a success by most accounts, and Thursday, team owners and team supporters unveiled plans to build on that success and to help restore the downtown area.
We're talkin’ a large entertainment complex right next to the Aces Stadium—the steel is already up, and developers say by the time next year's first pitch is thrown at Aces Stadium, the first phase of the Freight House District will be open for business.
Mayor Bob Cashell says, “This is very big for this area, very big. It's the dream we've all had when we approved it coming in 'cause it’s creating jobs and upgrading a blighted area."
In fact, the mayor tells us the new 30,000 square-foot entertainment center will generate a total of about 250 jobs, 40 percent of them during construction.
The center will cost between 10 and 12 million dollars to complete, and developers say downtown visitors are in for a treat.
Stuart Katzoff is one of the people behind the project. He says to expect "a high-end Mexican concept with over 100 tequilas and margaritas, an industrial-type live music venue that will have dancing and live music, with a concert atmosphere. Also, a really great beer garden with more than 100 types of beers and food to complement that."
And there will be what Katzoff describes as an “incredible sports bar.” It’s open year round and looks into the stadium.
Backers of the project hope that the 500,000 people who went to Aces games last year will now be enticed to stay downtown
“It's going to be a unique spot that doesn't exist in most cities and doesn't exist here. We’re really excited about it,” says Katzoff.
This is just the beginning of a major collaborative effort to revamp downtown. Eventually, we're told, dozens more restaurants, sports bars, and retail stores will make up the Freight House District.

Too bad those "fun" sports bars they plan on building will have to be shut down at 2am because people bought houses downtown and now want to complain about noise. And Robert, I'm highly surprised you aren't jobless/homeless. How do you hold a job when your grammar and spelling is so terrible?
I enjoyed working for the aces, and the Katzoff's did a great job. Though the jobs pay poorly, they came when no one else was hiring. The city counsel did a great job supporting the stadium. Jessica Spharaza was the only person that did not support the stadium, yet in my opinion she needed to play devils advocate. We have a great city council that does a great job. We are lucky to have good ones.
the next step is to get rid of that homeless shelter. how can you revitalize when you have people creating the problem. were just wharehousing them and nothing is being done about the problem. to bad
