Father & Son From Fallon Serving Together in Afghanistan
It isn't often you see father and son deployed at the same time, in the same unit, to the same base. But for local Nevadans Senior and Junior Bartley O'Toole it's no big deal. Posted: 4:22 AM Nov 3, 2009Reporter: Anne Cutler Email Address: anne.cutler@kolotv.com |

A father and son from Fallon are spending quality time together overseas.
Senior and Junior Bartley O'Toole were deployed to Afghanstan in September and are both serving with the 192nd Airlift Sqaudron in Bagram.
It isn't often you see father and son deployed at the same time, in the same unit, to the same base.
Lieutenant Colonel Bartley O'Toole explains how it happened. "We're a small squadron and it was RAF, so it was a good chance we'd both be there. But not together."
Neither Lieutentant Colonel O'Toole nor Senior Airman O'Toole see what the fuss is about. Among their fellow airmen, though it's a coincidence that hasn't gone un-noticed.
"For the guys from Reno, we take our fair share of ribbing over this. They ask if I'm going to read him a bedtime story- Tuck me in at night- but for the most part, we just do or jobs and that's about it," says the Lieutenant.
Aside from the jokes the O'Tooles keep busy protecting our country. This is Lieutenant Colonel O'Toole's tenth deployment to the middle east. He's served in the guard for more than twenty years. The younger O'Toole is a freight technician. He takes care of life-saving appliances and keeps his fellow airmen up to date on combat and water survival. Meanwhile, wife and mother Holly holds down the fort at home.
"Holly's a pretty solid person, so I'd imagine that she's concentrating on what it takes to run a household at home. I guess when it comes down to it, she's got a pretty good head on her shoulders." That's according to Lieutenant Colonel O'Toole.
When asked what they miss most about Nevada it's the simple things. Good food, fall weather and the excitement of an upcoming winter season.
"I just heard it's going to start snowing in the Sierras, so I'm just ready to go snowboard!" says Senior Airman Bartley O'Toole.
But first the O'Tooles must finish their work in Afghanistan knowing they have the support of family both at home and abroad. It may be a coincidence but in a war zone it's the little things that help them rest easier at night.
And we could see a three-peat down the road.Cadet Brogan O'Toole is in his final year at the Air Force Academy in Colorado. No word yet if he'll be volunteering for deployment as well.
