Reno-Tahoe International Airport's passenger counts soared high in February, airport officials reported.

Passenger traffic climbed 13.6 percent from the same month a year ago for the largest month-over-month increase in seven years.

A total of 403,118 passengers passed through the airport in February, up 48,237 from last year.

The 13.6 percent increase exceeds the national average of 5.5 percent for February domestic flights.

"These exciting numbers are a result of several factors, including a healthy local economy, (and) additional flights and available seats," said Krys Bart, airport executive director.

The average airline load factor at the airport was 72.6 percent, 3.5 percent higher than the national average.

"These are summer numbers," said Tom Medland, director of marketing. "To have a 13.6 percent increase in February is unprecedented."

Cargo numbers also were up, with nearly 8 million pounds of cargo moving through the airport, up 2.5 percent over last February.
