The U.S. Justice Department has recognized an area of southeast Reno as worthy of federal assistance to fight crime.

The designation of the nearly five-square mile area as an official "weed and seed" site allows officials to apply for a federal grant and participate in federally sponsored training and technical assistance.

The recognition was announced Thursday by Nevada U.S. Attorney Dan Bogden.

Operation Weed and Seed was established in 1991 as a way to bring community's together to control violent and drug-related crimes in high-crime neighborhoods.

The area in southeast Reno is bordered by Vassar Street on the north, McCarran Boulevard on the south, sections of Virginia and Plumas Streets on the west and Reno-Tahoe Airport on the east.
