Running a red traffic light is never a good idea. And it's getting to be a worse one in Reno.
The police department is getting almost $117,000 to crack down on people who blow stop lights.
Police Chief Jerry Hoover told the City Council on Wednesday that red light running is a major problem in the city and his staff will be working to overcome the problem.
A $19,500 Red Light Running Traffic Safety grant comes through the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety and funds overtime for heavy enforcement by police at problem intersections.
A $97,428 federal grant funds mobile data terminals for patrol vehicles and development and implementation of crime mapping capabilities in patrol car computers.
It requires a cash match of $10,825 that will come from the police department budget.
