Pilot Chutes To Safety Before Plane Crashes Near Reno

The pilot of a small aircraft parachuted to safety moments before his single-passenger plane crashed early Wednesday north of Reno.

The aircraft, described as a biplane, went down around 7 a.m.

Witness told KRNV-TV that they saw the pilot parachute out before the plane hit the ground.

"The engine sounded weird," said David Hartman, adding that the plane then disappeared over the horizon.

A sheriff's deputy said the pilot was up and walking around when rescuers arrived at the scene.

He was taken to Washoe Medical Center, where was listed in fair condition.
